John
Mulvany is an artist from Ireland who has been living and working
in Austin for the past four years. He makes
oil paintings and mixed-media works based on themes of cultural and
personal identity and the shifts in identity that occur with immigration.
He had his first exhibition in Austin at Bolm Studios last April and
has recently returned from Ireland where he had his latest exhibition. “The
history of Ireland is a history of invasions. From the arrival of the
Celts, the Vikings and the English, the Irish identity has gone through
so many transformations that the idea of Irishness has become increasingly
confused. Since I have moved to the U.S. my work has explored these
themes of national identity, immigration and history”. |
