Jennifer Chenoweth | Fisterra Studio 1200 East 2nd Street - Go to Map My abstract paintings and sculptures are an inquiry into the creative process. By pairing iconic shapes with indexical marks, I create both a conceptual and expressive examination that parallels the philosophic inquiry of becoming and being. In this pursuit, I utilize all approaches of art making, from careful renderings in oil paint, to castings of concrete in modular forms, to the use of outsourced fabrication with industrial finishes. My process is labor-intensive and deliberate but my intent is to create pieces that appear unstructured so that they generate a spontaneous if provocative experience. When they connect, my creations evoke a visceral response in the observer that at a conceptual level nevertheless questions the eidetic reading of shapes – whether they are unique, imagined entities that I design or abstract forms that reference known objects. I use color to add perspective on every surface, from steel to wood, constructing some works directly on the walls in my house. Recent work has been shown at The People’s Gallery at Austin City Hall, at the Creative Research Lab at The University of Texas at Austin, at Decorazon Gallery in Dallas, Texas and at art fairs in London, Miami, and Santa Fe. Past work has been shown in Kansas City, Santa Fe, San Antonio and Houston. My 102-year old house and studio have been part of the East Austin Studio Tour since its inception in 2003. |
