As the recipient of numerous
awards, Dr. Koorosh Angali is a self taught artist in its fullest
sense: he taught himself to draw and paint, play the guitar and
bass guitar, and act on the stage. He does all of that professionally.
Later on, however, he attended Humboldt State University at Arcata,
California, and received his B.A. in visual arts in 1980, but he
did not pursue formal education—it was just too disappointing.
One of the techniques that he has been studying for over twenty-five
years is the Alla Prima technique of oil painting. Developed by
the Dutch artists of the Baroque period, including Rubens and his
followers, and later on used by such masters as Jean-Antoine Watteau,
Eugène Delacroix, and Renoir, the technique allows the artist
to finish an entire canvas in one setting—hence, the denomination.
In addition to this technique, Koorosh implements the basic traditional
techniques of the masters as well; especially Caravaggio and, lately,
Odd Nerdrum. In his acrylic painting, Koorosh has developed his
own technique, which combines the traditional oil painting techniques
with that of the watercolor and super-realist rendition of details.
