After several years off
from artwork while finishing a Social Thought Masters at New York
University, Joelle realized that her degree brought
no more career options than painting and illustration do. So she
moved south, and in 2005 unpacked her art gear at what is now Pump
Project. She is inspired by the shapes and patterns around us, from
shadows cast by buildings’ angles to curves in wind-bent blades
of grass. A recent obsession is old photographs. Many newer works
reference black and white pictures from the 1930s and 40s, combined
with ideas and colors from newer sources and imaginings.
